Civil War, 1863.

“The fact is, ‘Club Men’ who live by wine, cards, tobacco, and billiards for their cheap stimulants and time-killers, gravitate very strongly towards Secesh sympathies. They are apt to think themselves aristocratic and gentlemen-like and they look up to the idle slave-owners with respect, as being more permanently idle than themselves; at least it is so here. Hence, the public opinion influenced by our clubs is generally unsound and there is great need of a rallying-point for the unconditional loyalists.”

-- John Murray Forbes, merchant and railroad magnate
