As Boston's population rapidly changed and increased, some of the city's wealthiest citizens came together to found the Somerset Club in 1852. These bourgeois Bostonians sought an exclusive space--like London's social clubs of the wealthy--that would provide a restaurant, recreation such as billiards and cards, reading and smoking rooms, and guestrooms.
